  1. Where I need to install DNKA on local server or each desktop computer?

You need to install a DNKA only on the computer which will be used as a Google Desktop Search server.

  2. Can anyone access my server?

By default (as installed) access is only granted to the local machine. To allow others to access your server you need to add at Hosts menu the ip's or host names of this computers.

  3. I was configurated DNKA to allow hosts that can search file on server and tried to call GDS via server ip address (host name), but it is not working.

At first: the link to the search should look like: http://server.com:4664/ - where server.com is a host name or ip address of search server and 4664 is it port number.

If you enter correct address and it doesn't work, then:

    • Check the server logs if it block's you or not. (to see them enter on local host to "Server Options" - "Misc Options" - "Access logs and blocked access logs" - "Full Blocked Access Log" and there you will see ip address of client computer and access time).

    • Do you have any firewall? Check if it blocks outgoing connections.

    • Especially for Internet Explorer try to type full URL including "http://".

    • Try to use alternative browser, not Internet Explorer (sometimes it work's very strange with local network websites).

  4. What is the default password for web access of the server options?

There is no default password. Access is denied by default.
You should enter at local server to "Server Options" - "Misc Options" - "Change Admin password" and set new password.

  5. How to make Google Desktop Search run under another user or when nobody logged in? (or how to run GDS as service)

To do that you will need run Google Desktop Search as service.

    • Go to Scheduled Tasks
Start menu -> Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Scheduled Tasks

    • Click Add Scheduled Task. Click Next.

    • Then find Google Desktop Search in the list or the exe by browsing. Click Next.

    • Name your task and select "When my computer starts" under Perform Task. Click Next.

    • Enter the name and password of a user under which Google Desktop Search is installed. Click Next.

    • Check "Open Advanced Properties.." and then click Finish.

    • The Advanced properties window should appear. Change command line at the end of text displayed in the Run edit box, it should have only one parameter "/startup", so the entire line will be something like:
      C:\PROGRA~1\Google\GOOGLE~1\GoogleDesktop.exe /startup

    • Then go to the settings tab and UNCHECK "Stop the task if....".

    • Click OK.

Now, GDS will start in the background every time the computer boots, and you will be able to connect to Google Desktop Search when nobody logged in or another user logged in. You can start and stop it from the Scheduled Tasks window by right clicking on it.

Minuses: the GDS Tray ICON does not display. Files indexed only if the user under which GDS started have access to them. Links "Restart Server" and "Server Options" from DNKA menu will not properly detect that GDS is runing at the moment.
